How Texas insurance licensing works
- 01
Be at least 18 years old
Texas requires all insurance license applicants to be 18 or older. You'll also need a Social Security number and a Texas residence (or non-resident application if you live out of state).
- 02
Complete pre-licensing study
Plan on roughly 40 hours of study per line of authority. Texas doesn't require state-approved hours like some states, but TDI and Pearson VUE both recommend a structured course before testing.
- 03
Schedule the Pearson VUE exam
Register for your exam through Pearson VUE. The cost is $43–$66 depending on line. You can test at a physical center or via OnVUE online proctoring from home.
- 04
Pass with 70% or higher
Texas insurance exams are 100–150 questions and 2 to 2.5 hours long. You need a score of 70% to pass. You'll get a preliminary pass/fail result before leaving the testing center.
- 05
Complete IdentoGO fingerprinting
Once you pass, schedule an IdentoGO appointment for state and FBI background checks. Cost is around $40. Bring your photo ID and your Pearson VUE pass slip.
- 06
Apply via NIPR or Sircon
Submit your Texas insurance license application through NIPR.com or Sircon. The state fee is $50. TDI typically issues the license within 7–10 business days of a clean background check.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get a Texas insurance license?
Most candidates complete the Texas insurance licensing process in 4 to 6 weeks: roughly 40 hours of pre-licensing study per line, a few days to schedule and pass the Pearson VUE exam, then 1–2 weeks for IdentoGO fingerprinting and TDI license approval through NIPR.
How much does a Texas insurance license cost?
Plan for $250 to $400 total in Texas. The Pearson VUE exam is $43–$66 per attempt, IdentoGO fingerprinting runs about $40, the TDI/NIPR license application fee is $50, and pre-licensing course costs vary by provider and line of authority.
How hard is the Texas insurance license exam?
The Texas insurance exam is challenging: statewide first-time pass rates hover near 65% for Life & Health and Property & Casualty. You need 70% to pass. Candidates who use a structured course with a large practice-question bank pass at significantly higher rates.
Do I need pre-licensing education in Texas?
Texas does not legally mandate pre-licensing hours for every line, but the Texas Department of Insurance and Pearson VUE both strongly recommend a structured pre-licensing course. Most candidates who skip prep fail the exam at least once, costing more in retake fees than the course itself.
What's on the Texas Life and Health insurance exam?
The Texas Life & Health exam covers life insurance policies, annuities, group and individual health, disability income, Medicare and ACA basics, and a dedicated Texas state law section on TDI rules, agent ethics, and licensing statutes. The exam is 150 questions, 2.5 hours.
